Patriots lead Giants 10-9 at half in Super Bowl XLVI Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 February 2012 12:59

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) --New England scored its first touchdown in Super Bowl XLVI with only seconds left in the first half to lead New York Giants 10-9.

Eli Manning started 9 for 9 for 77 yards and the TD to Victor Cruz, who did his celebratory salsa dance in the back of the end zone with about 3½ minutes left in the quarter. Manning is the first quarterback to begin a Super Bowl with nine consecutive completions.

Manning was the MVP back in 2008, when New York upset New England in the Super Bowl, ruining the Patriots’ bid for a perfect season.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been a Super Bowl MVP twice himself, but started as shakily as could be Sunday. On his first play of the game, which began at New England’s 6, he threw the ball away deep while standing in his own end zone and being pressured by Giants defensive lineman Justin Tuck.

A penalty for intentional grounding was called, which resulted in the safety and a 2-0 lead for the Giants. Only one other time in Super Bowl history did the game’s first score come on a safety, all the way back in 1975, when the Steelers beat the Vikings.

That also meant New England had to kick the ball back to New York, and Manning led a 78-yard, nine-play drive that ended with the TD, making it 9-0.

Little went right for New England at the outset.

New York ran 19 of the game’s first 20 plays, outgaining New England 108-0 in yards and holding a time-of-possession edge of 11 minutes, 28 seconds to 8 seconds. New England didn’t get its initial first down until there were under two minutes left in the opening quarter.

There also was an apparent fumble by the Giants, recovered by the Patriots — except it was wiped out by a penalty because New England was caught with 12 men on the field, instead of 11.

The only positive early on for the AFC champion Patriots? They won the pregame coin toss, after NFC teams had won the past 14 at the Super Bowl.

New England deferred its choice until the second half, giving New York the ball first.

End of First Quarter: Giants: 9, Patriots 0

The Patriots finally got on the board with a 29-yard field goal with 13:52 left in the second quarter.

Brady got his first touchdown with only seconds left in the first half with a four-yard pass.

End of First Half: Patriots 10, Giants 9

Sunday’s game is a rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl, when the Giants had an upset 17-14 win over the Patriots, ending New England’s bid for a perfect season.

The Patriots (15-3) enter on a 10-game winning streak. Their last loss came against New York in the regular season, a 24-20 Giants victory on Nov. 6. The Giants (12-7) have won five consecutive games.

The roof is closed at Lucas Oil Stadium as Indianapolis hosts the NFL championship game for the first time, with an expected U.S. TV audience exceeding 100 million.

Fire Destroys Apartment Building In Bridgeville Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 February 2012 12:05

BRIDGEVILLE (KDKA) – Several people are homeless after intense flames swept through an apartment building in Bridgeville overnight.

According to emergency dispatchers, the fire broke out in the 600-block of Baldwin Street around 3:40 a.m. There were residents living in four apartment units.

Officials say they believe the fire may have started in a kitchen in one of the apartments.

“I woke up to this and started coughing, smelled smoke, and went downstairs and just seen fire in my kitchen,” said resident Desiree King.

The blaze spread quickly through the three-story, wood-framed building. Susan Craddock also woke up to the smell of smoke in her apartment.

“There was just smoke everywhere; [my boyfriend] went to check the radiator,” said Craddock. “I just told him we had to get out right now. I grabbed my phone, called 911 and started banging on everyone’s doors.”

Fortunately, none of the residents were injured. However, flames engulfed the building so fast that firefighters had no chance to save the structure.

“We’re tearing it down now because the building is unsafe; a lot of collapse in the building,” said Chief Bill Chilleo, of the Bridgeville Fire Department. “We can’t get to areas where the fire is still burning.”

The flames were so intense they scorched the side of an occupied house next door. One firefighter was treated for a minor health issue.

Even as the building was being demolished, flames could still be seen in the attic.

The residents were feeling fortunate that they got out safely. However, most, if not all of their possessions were destroyed along with the building.

“Everybody got out safely, that’s the most important part,” King added.

Candle Could Be To Blame In Ross Twp. Fire Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 February 2012 11:53

ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — Fire caused some damage to a home in Ross Township on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say the fire started in a second-floor bedroom inside a house in the 100-block of Varney Street.

Everyone got out safely, but a little girl who lives in the home was in tears as she watched from the street.

“There was a candle in my room; it probably caught on something,” she said.

“I was downstairs getting something for my daughter, and my step-sister, she started screaming, ‘Fire!’ So, I went upstairs and she said it was in her room,” resident Chris Donovan said. “So, I ran upstairs and the door was halfway open and I [saw] flames. I pushed the door open and there was just a massive amount of flames everywhere.”

A fire official later said it was the candle that started the fire.

Firefighters said they were able to keep the fire contained to the single room and the family was able to return to the home.

Fleury pulled as Devils defeat Penguins 5-2 Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 February 2012 08:57

Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists, and the New Jersey Devils extended their winning streak to four with a 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.

Anton Volchenkov, Dainius Zubrus, Zach Parise and David Clarkson also scored for the Devils, who remained perfect since the All Star break while equaling their season-best win streak. Kovalchuk has been the key to the surge with three goals and seven assists in the four games.

Martin Brodeur made 28 saves to improve to 11-2 in his last 13 decisions against Pittsburgh. He also got an assist on Clarkson's empty-net score in the closing seconds.

The win moved New Jersey within one point of fifth-place Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference.

Matt Niskanen and Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins who had won nine of 10. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was yanked early in the second period after surrendering three goals, ending his nine-game winning streak.

Kovalchuk powered the Devils to a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Cruising all alone in the slot, Kovalchuk whipped a feed from Patrik Elias past Fleury for his team-leading 22nd goal at 2:21.

Kovalchuk was the playmaker on the second tally at 9:33, sending a return pass to Volchenkov in the slot. It was the first goal in 104 games for the defenseman, and his first with the Devils.

Malkin had two quality chances for the Penguins, including one in the closing seconds of the period as Brodeur denied him with a spinning save.

New Jersey increased the lead to 3-0 at 2:28 in the second, getting a short-handed tally from Zubrus that was set up by a terrific effort by Kovalchuk.

The sequence started when Kovalchuk blocked a shot from Paul Martin at the point. Those two battled down the ice for possession with Kovalchuk winning and driving to the net only to be denied by Fleury. Zubrus knocked in the rebound as the Devils scored their league-leading 13th short-handed goal.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma pulled Fleury at that point, sending in Brent Johnson.

The move helped stem the Devils' momentum and the Penguins cashed in the remaining power play when Niskanen scored at 3:02.

Parise restored the three-goal lead for the Devils with his 20th goal at 11:33.

In the third, Brodeur maintained the three-goal margin with a stellar stop on James Neal's shot from the right circle.

Pittsburgh turned up the pressure after Volchenkov was whistled for high-sticking midway through the period, and it paid off when Malkin got his 29th, a power-play goal at 11:43.

NOTES: C Adam Henrique returned for the Devils after missing the last three games with a groin injury. To clear roster space, New Jersey returned D Peter Harrold to Albany of the AHL. ... D Adam Larsson (sore back) and C Ryan Carter (hand injury) sat out for New Jersey while RW Cam Janssen was a healthy scratch. ... D Ben Lovejoy and RW Colin McDonald were healthy scratches for Pittsburgh while RW Arron Asham missed a ninth straight game with a concussion.

Devils Capitalize On Early Mistakes, Beat Pens 5-2 Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 February 2012 08:38

NEWARK, N.J. (KDKA) – The Penguins were looking to win their second game in as many days, but the New Jersey Devils had other ideas Sunday afternoon.

New Jersey jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 5-2 win.

Ilya Kovalchuk got the Devils on the board just 2:21 into the first period.

Marc-Andre Fleury went behind the net to play a puck, but couldn’t get a handle on it and it bounced by him. Patrik Elias found Kovalchuk coming late on the play and he fired a low one-timer by Fleury to put New Jersey up 1-0.

About seven minutes later, the Devils’ passing increased the lead.

Alexei Ponikarovsky hit Kovalchuk with a cross-ice pass, which drew Fleury out of the net. Kovalchuk found Anton Volchenkov in the high slot and he fired the puck into a gaping net to put the Devils up 2-0 9:33 into the game.

The Penguins looked flat for much of the period, but managed to outshoot the Devils 11-10 in the first. However, they could not get a puck behind Martin Brodeur.

In the second period, the Penguins were given an early power play chance, which proved to be a turning point in the game.

Paul Martin was unable to keep a puck in the offensive zone. He turned around and raced for it with Kovalchuk hot on his heels. As they closed in on the puck, Kovalchuk reached out with his free hand and appeared to hold up Martin, but nothing was called.

Kovalchuk gained control of the puck and his shot was stopped by Fleury. However, Dainius Zubrus was there for the rebound and chipped it home to put New Jersey up 3-0.

That would be the end of the day for Fleury, who was replaced by Brent Johnson.

Just 34 seconds later, Matt Niskanen ripped a slap shot by Brodeur to capitalize on the power play and keep the Penguins in the game.

However, about eight minutes later Zach Parise’s stuff attempt from the short side found its way through Johnson and put the Devils up 4-1.

Evgeni Malkin recorded another highlight reel goal on Brodeur roughly midway through the third period.

While on the power play, Malkin took control from the left point, closed in on the net, stepped around a prone defenseman and tucked the puck between Brodeur’s legs to cut the deficit to 4-2.

That would be as close as the Penguins would get as the Devils fought off a late charge and David Clarkson added an empty net goal to cap the scoring in the contest.

The Penguins will now head to Montreal for a game Tuesday night against the Canadiens.

Occupy Pittsburgh protesters packing up tents before Monday’s deadline Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 February 2012 06:44

Protesters with Occupy Pittsburgh are packing up their tents a day before the deadline for their eviction from a downtown park.

The group has been camping there since Oct. 15.

Last week, a judge ruled protesters have damaged the property and that the ongoing trespass meets the legal standard of "irreparable harm" to Bank of New York Mellon Corp., which owns the park.

Occupy Pittsburgh member Jeff Cech said the group has been told it must be out by noon Monday. He said Sunday members have taken down about half the estimated 50 tents.

Cech also said he doesn't anticipate confrontations over leaving the space.

The group is protesting what it describes as economic inequality and corporate greed.
